Brian Duke, Rewind & Spooling Lead
When it comes to getting things done—from training new employees to painting the walkways—everyone at STL knows that Brian Duke is the kind of Jack of All Trades that can get it done.In a recent email explaining why Brian was the chosen employee for this month’s spotlight, Shelle Pascua, Production Systems Manager, said, “Over his past seven years with Superior Tape and Label, Brian has exceeded the expectations of his job by always being willing to stay late if necessary to complete a job, helping others when needed and looking out for the company’s best interests.”
Since he began working at STL, Brian has always tried to learn a little about everything and share his knowledge with those around him. From his first placement in spooling to his new position as a Rewind & Spooling Lead, his dedication to his positions has enhanced the lives of everyone around him.
One of his most recent coating trainees, Deb, is a prime example. Every day for 3 weeks, Brian supported her learning and showed her the basics of safe work procedures as well as the hands-on examples that helped her be successful.
“Every day, she was thanking me, thanking me, thanking me,” Brian says modestly. “I was like, ‘I’m just doing my job.’ It’s neat to see her progress.”
But looking out for others is more than just a job for Brian, it’s a way of life. Not only is he deeply involved in following up with and supporting people he’s trained on the job, but he’s working to help others find love and support in his personal life as well.
Since 2013, Brian and his wife have opened their home to several foster children, two of which they’ve adopted into their family of five. And soon, they may be expecting a new foster child.
“I have an 11-year-old, two 9-year-olds, a six-year-old, a three-year-old, and potential new foster baby. I have a big God and he’s done a big work in my life,” Brian says.
In addition to a love for family, Brian also aspires to help kids within his religion, and hopes to one day work with children as a youth pastor, continuing his work as a mentor for those who are in most need.
But when it comes down to it, Brian says its not really that special. He’s just treating people like individuals and helping them on their own terms.
“I love to see people succeed and improve. I would love to move into any position, inside work or out, that allows me to better assist and help people to be the best they can be.”
With Brian on the STL team, that’s one goal that everyone is working towards—and with fantastic results.
